Jets backup QB Tyrod Taylor has surgery on knee, will miss rest of preseason

NEW YORK — Gang Green is down a quarterback for the short term.
Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will miss the rest of the preseason after recently having a surgical procedure done on his knee.
Taylor missed practice last week because of the injury.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn said Taylor’s procedure was “a minor scope,” but did not say if he will be ready for the Jets’ season opener against the Steelers on Sept. 7.
“We’ll see exactly where he is in the next couple of weeks,” Glenn said after Tuesday’s practice. “I don’t think he will be playing in the preseason, but hopefully he will be ready for Week 1.”
Taylor, 36, is entering his second season as the Jets’ backup quarterback after signing with the team during the 2024 offseason. He played in just two games last season, with Aaron Rodgers mostly playing a majority of the snaps under center.
Following Rodgers’ release and Justin Fields signing a two-year, $40 million contract in March, Taylor is expected to be the Jets’ backup once again. However, Taylor’s career has been marred by injuries.
During his two seasons as the Giants’ backup quarterback before signing with the Jets, Taylor suffered a concussion and a rib injury that kept him out a total of six games. He has also had injuries to his wrist and suffered a punctured lung during pregame warmups when he was with the Chargers in 2020.
The Jets’ other quarterbacks on their roster are Adrian Martinez, who spent all of last season on their practice squad, and undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who limped off the field during team drills after injuring his ankle. However, Glenn doesn’t believe Cook’s injury is serious after someone stepped on his ankle.
“He’s been great,” Fields said about Taylor. “Of course he’s been in a lot of different offenses as well, so he’ll pitch in some ideas when he sees certain concepts that we run, certain defenses that we face, and stuff like that.
“So, it’s good having him in the room and learning from him. It’s also kind of like Russ [Russell Wilson] last year, I think this is Year 15 for him now. So, of course, he’s seen a lot of things and played in a lot of games. So, it’s great having him in the room.”
Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard will also miss the next two weeks after injuring his right shoulder during the Jets’ preseason win against the Packers on Saturday night.
There is good news on the Jets’ injury front after rookie tight end Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain) and left guard John Simpson (back) both returned to practice. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson (Achilles) were both limited after practicing off to the side.
