Malik Nabers held out of Giants-Jets first joint practice, Brian Daboll mum on toe

NEW YORK — Top Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers skipped last Saturday’s preseason opener at Buffalo. Now he’s continuing to sit out practice against the Jets.
Nabers has had a strong training camp despite a nagging toe injury that he admitted may require surgery one day. But his absence dragging into Tuesday’s trip to Florham Park, N.J., is concerning.
The second-year receiver was held out of last Wednesday’s and Thursday’s team periods in preparation for the Giants’ trip to face the Bills. He was sidelined for the exhibition opener. And now he’s still not back on the field.
Head coach Brian Daboll was asked if Nabers was managing the toe or if this is another injury. Nabers had left a practice earlier in camp with what looked like a shoulder issue after a collision.
“Again, I’m not going to get into injuries, as you all know,” Daboll said. “These guys are rehabbing, and they’ll be back as soon as they can.”
Daboll would not answer if Nabers has to go for any additional tests on his toe, either.
“I’d say all the guys that are not here practicing are rehabbing and doing everything they can do to get back,” Daboll said. “He’s rehabbing, and he’s doing everything he can do to get back.”
Nabers wasn’t the only big name absent from Tuesday’s practice, either. Left tackle Andrew Thomas wasn’t on the field at all and remains on the physically unable to perform list.
Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, corner Dru Phillips, guard Evan Neal, running back Cam Skattebo, receiver Da’Quan Felton and corner Tre Hawkins III also didn’t participate.
Hyatt and Neal continuing to miss time after being sidelined by injury from the Bills game is bad timing for two players who badly need to have strong camps to establish roles on this year’s team.
Corner Korie Black and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles worked on a side field with trainers and did not practice. Corner Cor’Dale Flott was back in the fold in some fashion.
Left tackles James Hudson III and Josh Ezeudu both got banged up during practice but returned to action.
