A shadowy elite plan to enslave the world will succeed if good people do nothing … but in J.H. Jones’ ambitious and imaginative "Rogue Unit: Awakening," there are still a few good men and women willing to fight back.

David Smith, an Office of Naval Intelligence investigator posing as an accountant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and his brilliant scientist fiancée, Yan Ru Chen, are in love and discussing their future when wedding bells take a temporary backseat to an emergency of global proportions.

Within the “Deep State” is a group known only as the Collective, and they are hard at work attempting to establish a global government run by the “elite,” and their evil knows no bounds. Their goal? A world culling of the population and the harvesting of adrenochrome from children to help keep the elite youthful — and forever in control of the bulk of humanity they view as slaves.

When David is kidnapped from the Las Vegas airport by a mysterious Russian agent and assassin named Natasha, the mayhem kicks off.

David learns Natasha is on the side of those fighting this organization of globalists intent on killing off most of the world, with the appropriately named Mr. Boarish representing the interests of the Collective. Soon, David learns that The Collective needs the daring innovations and genius of his fiancée, Yan Ru, to succeed.

The novel goes into great detail about Yan Ru’s slow acceptance of The Collective’s existence and diabolical plans. Her father, Admiral Chen, sends her off to the Gobi Desert for an intense “boot camp” to prepare her for the battles to come.

Meanwhile, David uses his vast network of military and intelligence connections to set up a major sting operation to steal more than $200 trillion from the Collective and redistribute the money back to federal taxpayers.

The hacked accounts are traced back to David and a fight for both his survival and Yan Ru’s takes up the majority of the action, as they team up with Natasha (who harbors growing feelings for David) and a colorful cast of supporting characters to outwit and outfight the paid goons in the employ of the wicked globalists.

David outlines the danger this nefarious entity poses to the nation: “Globalism is like any other form of totalitarianism; it steals the workers’ work, it scorns the intellectuals’ thoughts, it seizes the artists’ creations. In short, it turns a society on itself and eats it alive.”

The darkest parts of "Rogue Unit: Awakening" are the descriptions of child sex trafficking, adrenochrome harvesting, and the actual sacrifice of children by the Collective. Graphic scenes strike when least expected as Natasha reveals to David the true extent of the Collective’s depravity.

Still, David knows he must bring this ugliness to light, as he addresses a roomful of warriors: “Things we believed in, institutions we trusted, have become corrupted … Children corrupted by dark demons walking among us claiming to be the ‘best’ while at the same time seeking to turn little kids into sex objects. Innocent, defenseless humans, turned into some sort of morsel for their bizarre tastes…”

Jones packs plenty of action into this conspiracy thriller’s 548 pages. From the sands of the Gobi to underwater French submarines, to parachute drops over the Pyrenees, the author’s imagination is fertile. The interactions between the multitude of side characters reveal relationships that precede the action of this novel, and the ending hints at still more action to come. Could a follow-up be forthcoming? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
