NEW YORK — Emmy Award winner Ayo Edebiri and Golden Globe, Grammy and Tony winner Don Cheadle will make their Broadway debuts next spring in a revival of the Pulitzer-winning play “Proof.”

“Hamilton” visionary Thomas Kail will direct and co-produce the production, which is set for a strictly limited engagement at a Shubert theater yet to be announced. Preview performances are scheduled to begin March 31, 2026, ahead of an April 16 opening night.

Written by David Auburn, the Chicago-set drama about a father and daughter united by mathematical genius and mental illness previously ran on Broadway from October 2000 to January 2003. In 2001, the Daniel Sullivan-directed production won the Tony Award for best play.

Edebiri, who stars on the FX series “The Bear,” and Cheadle — known for roles in “Boogie Nights,” “Crash,” “Hotel Rwanda” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe — will be the first Black actors to portray the lead characters of “Proof” on Broadway.

The main father and daughter roles were originated by Larry Bryggman and Mary-Louise Parker. Other actors who have starred in the roles include Anne Heche, Len Cariou, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Patrick Tovatt.

In 2002, Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris made his Broadway debut in the production in a supporting role.

The acclaimed play has been widely staged and was adapted into a feature film starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis in 2005.

A rep for the forthcoming Broadway revival said that additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.
