RALEIGH, N.C. — Police searched NC State’s Sigma Nu fraternity house Friday afternoon amid a criminal investigation into alleged hazing at the Raleigh university’s oldest fraternity. The brotherhood is currently suspended from campus.

The school said in a statement that its campus police department, “with assistance from partner law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant at the Sigma Nu fraternity house as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.” The spokesperson said providing any further information might “jeopardize the integrity” of the probe.

The search warrant is not yet publicly available, but The News & Observer will provide relevant details from the warrant once it becomes available.

On Wednesday, The N&O’s newsgathering partner ABC 11 reported that a white sheet with the words “relax pal” drawn on it was seen hanging from a second-floor balcony of the Sigma Nu house. It was quickly taken down. On Friday, police tape surrounded the house.

University police received an anonymous report on Oct. 14 that an “an unspecified fraternity” was hazing its members using date rape drugs, according to the university’s crime log. The N&O has requested the police report for this incident but the university has yet to produce it.

Mickey Brigham, a 26-year-old graduate student at NC State, suspects the university is cracking down harder on fraternities in the wake of the Cornell Seven gang rape case that rocked the nation in recent months.

“I wonder to what extent the administration is paying closer attention,” Brigham told The N&O. “I certainly would think there’s more of a magnifying glass in this moment on frats and their conduct.”

The university said it “does not tolerate hazing” and “the safety and wellbeing of our students is of the utmost importance.”
