Steelers bringing in Jabrill Peppers for safety help

PITTSBURGH — With the knee injury to safety DeShon Elliott, the Steelers are signing safety Jabrill Peppers, a former No. 1 draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, sources told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Elliott was injured in the season opener against the New York Jets and is expected to be out a couple weeks. Peppers is being signed as a backup.
Peppers, 29, played the past three seasons with the New England Patriots, starting 26 of 38 games with three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Peppers was the 25th overall selection in the 2017 draft and played two seasons with the Browns before he was traded to the New York Giants as part of the deal for receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
In three seasons with the Giants, Peppers started 30 of 32 games and had two interceptions, including one for a 32-yard touchdown return.
Peppers was a surprise cut from the New England Patriots just before the season. He started six games last year, as his season was cut short by legal troubles. Peppers was out seven games after being put on the commissioner exempt list Oct. 9 following charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was removed from the list Nov. 25 but appeared in only two of the Patriots' final five games because of injuries.
Peppers was ultimately acquitted of those charges in January.
