Congressional watchdog clears Ilhan Omar over financial disclosure errors

A congressional ethics watchdog has cleared U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of wrongdoing over errors in a financial disclosure that initially listed millions of dollars in assets tied to her husband’s businesses.

The Office of Congressional Conduct investigated whether Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, reported false or incomplete information in violation of federal law or House rules. Its board voted 5-1 to recommend the House Ethics Committee dismiss the allegations.

The report said there was not “substantial reason to believe” Omar had reported false or incomplete information.

“The Office of Congressional Conduct delivered an overwhelming vote to dismiss any allegations against the Congresswoman,” Jacklyn Rogers, Omar’s communications director, said in a statement to The Minnesota Star Tribune. “From day one, we have been clear: The Congresswoman is not a millionaire.”

Rogers said the vote showed Omar “did nothing wrong” and characterized the allegations as an attempt by the far right to “manufacture controversy.”

The investigation centered on a financial disclosure Omar filed in 2025 that initially valued assets belonging to Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, at between $6 million and $30 million. Omar later amended the filing, reducing the couple’s reported assets to between $18,004 and $95,000.

The discrepancy largely involved two businesses connected to Mynett: a venture-capital management firm in Washington, D.C., and a winery in Santa Rosa, California. The initial filing valued the businesses at between $6 million and $30 million. The amended filing listed them as having no value after liabilities were taken into account.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the watchdog report on Wednesday.

Omar’s aides previously said she reviewed the original filing but did not catch the errors because she is not involved in her husband’s businesses and relied on the accountant who prepared the disclosure.

Omar’s latest financial disclosure, filed in May, lists assets totaling between $20,006 and $125,000, according to a Star Tribune calculation. It also lists between $15,001 and $50,000 in student loan debt and between $15,001 and $50,000 in credit-card debt belonging to her husband.

President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have scrutinized Omar’s finances in recent months. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, previously raised the possibility of subpoenaing Mynett over the apparent increase in the couple’s assets.

Omar, 43, was first elected to Congress in 2018 and represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis and several surrounding suburbs.
