Rep. Dan Goldman-aligned super PAC's poll has incumbent 5% behind Lander

NEW YORK — Rep. Dan Goldman trails ex-New York City Comptroller Brad Lander by 5% in a poll of their Democratic primary race in the NY-10 district that was conducted by a group allied with Goldman.
Lander, who is challenging Goldman from the left, won the support of 47% of likely voters surveyed compared to 42% for the incumbent in the district spanning lower Manhattan and a chunk of brownstone Brooklyn.
In another possible sign of trouble for Goldman, the edge for Lander grows to 9% among voters who say they are certain to vote in the June 23 primary for the seat Goldman has held for two terms since 2022.
Democratic voters in the deep-blue district have an an overwhelmingly positive view of Lander, with 71% viewing him positively compared to just 16% negatively.
That’s a +55% margin for Lander, compared to +35% for Goldman, which is about on par with the responses about other Democratic legislative leaders like Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
The poll of 465 likely NY-10 Democratic voters was conducted early this month and funded by New Yorkers Fighting Back, a pro-Goldman super PAC that is reportedly bankrolled by the leader of a group of New York hospitals.
It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%, meaning it suggests the two candidates could either be locked in a virtual dead heat or Lander could be leading by a healthy 9% margin.
The pollsters did not release breakdowns for the Manhattan and Brooklyn portions of the district to the public. But it estimated that 45% of the votes will be cast in Manhattan, a figure that analysts say is optimistic for Goldman given that Lander is expected to rack up big margins on the Brooklyn side of the East River.
“The math is just super daunting for (Goldman) here,” tweeted Adam Carlson, a Democratic pollster who has seen other polls of the district. “Lander’s very well-known & well-liked in increasingly progressive Brownstone Brooklyn, which makes up a majority of the NY-10 vote.”
The poll was released a few hours after Goldman, a liberal lawyer and millionaire heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, held a rally with Gov. Kathy Hochul and labor leaders who have endorsed him. They praise him as an effective legislator with a strong record of pushing back against President Donald Trump’s right-wing second term agenda.
Lander, a progressive from Park Slope who embraced Mayor Zohran Mamdani in his historic winning race for City Hall, says he would be a more dynamic activist voice for the district on the national stage.
