Rob Lowe has admitted being famous and single in the 1980s was "incredible".

The West Wing actor - who married Sheryl Berkoff, the mother of his sons Matthew, 33, and John Owen, 30, in 1991 - reflected on the early days of his career success and admitted the fun he had at the time was "better" than people could "dream" of.

Speaking on Chicks in the Office, he said: "It was just an incredible time. It was an incredible time to be in the business. It was an incredible time to make movies. It was an incredible time to party. It was an incredible time to be single. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

"In the totality of humanity, if I could have lived in any time, that would have been it."

Host Maria 'Ria' Ciuffo admitted she'd have liked to have lived in the 80s too and Rob said: "It's better than you dream.

"It was better than you dream."

The 62-year-old star noted making plans could be unpredictable at the time because communication wasn't easy, but he found that "beautiful".

He said: "No social media. No cell phone cameras.

"The intrigue of it was beautiful."

Rob believes fame is now a "burden" for young stars, and they're not having the levels of "fun" he did when making his name.

Meanwhile, Rob previously cited "resilience" as the key to his longevity in Hollywood because he had to overcome a lot during the course of his career.

Asked to name his greatest virtue, Rob told GQ: "My optimism. The optimism leads to resilience and resilience is probably the greatest key for survival of a long career and a happy personal life.

"You get knocked down, you get back up, you have a long day, you're ready to go the next day. It's very valuable."

Rob is well-known for his commitment to health and fitness - but the actor admitted that he likes to indulge occasionally, too.

Asked to name his worst vice, Rob sarcastically replied: "At the moment, my worst vice is waking up in the middle of the night to eat a pint of ice cream. I don't know where that's coming from - I've never had that in my life. But it's my new cross to bear.

"I say to myself, 'You know what would solve this problem? A pint of chocolate ice cream.'"
