Sam Smith is feeling "maternal" and "hungry" to have children.

The 34-year-old singer - who identifies as non-binary and uses gender neutral pronouns - was inspired by their mum Kate Cassidy for new single Oh Mother and admitted parenthood is something they have been thinking about more often in recent times.

Sam, who is engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan, told BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Sara Cox: "'In this song I was just trying to access my mum's fury and protection that comes to save the day when a child gets hurt or heartbroken.

"As I'm getting older I feel like I'm becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that.

"So it definitely felt like a maturing theme to step into for me, which was really great."

Sam praised the unrelenting support of their whole family.

They added: "Oh my gosh, yeah, I mean my dad and my mum, my sisters, my whole family have been a rock for me through everything I've gone through."

Meanwhile, despite years of chart success, Sam - who is engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan - recently admitted they

still feel "gutted" they didn't become a fishmonger.

Speaking on the Dish podcast, they said: "I'm still gutted I'm not a fishmonger.

"Honestly, I used to go to Waitrose a lot as a kid and the fish section, I just loved.

"I like to handle fish. It felt very calming."

Sam now lives in New York, and admitted one of the "disasters" about being away from England is missing out on traditional British fish and chips.

They said: "It's actually one of the disasters of my life right now.

"It's like I actually get sad sometimes. Apparently, it's something to do with the potato, I got told, and the water in New York and you can't get it the same.

"But I have a thing with fish and chips, right? So, I love fish and chips from fish and chip shops where like the chips like stick together.

"And you've got like the silver hot plate when you walk in. But I feel like the gastropub fish and chips ... I call them posh fish and chips, I don't see that as fish and chips."

Sam even struggles to find "proper fish and chips" when they head back to London to visit.

They added: "And even in London, I find it hard to find proper fish and chips.

"Like my family from Whitley Bay, my favourite fish and chip shop is called Marshall's there, which is amazing.

"When people talk about fish and chips, they're not talking about the same fish and chips I am."

In 2023, Sam told of their love of fishing, and said they would like to be a "fisher-them" - a gender-neutral play on fisherman, aligning with their non-binary pronouns.

Sam said on The One Show: "I'd just like to end my days fishing."
