Snooki to undergo hysterectomy amid cervical cancer diagnosis

NEW YORK — Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi revealed she is slated to undergo a hysterectomy surgery following her recent cervical cancer diagnosis.
The “Jersey Shore” star opened up about her health in a new interview with People.
Polizzi said she’d put off her regular Pap smear appointment for well over a year before she finally summoned the courage to visit her doctor in February. She noted that she has received abnormal Pap smear results, showing precancerous cells, for the last four years, though she claimed they were “nothing crazy.” Still, her doctor recommended that she get screenings every six months, which is significantly more often than the standard of every three years.
“I was scared, ”Polizzi said. “But you know what? It’s not the worst case and I can still deal with it. I’m gonna be fine.”
While she has come to terms with the situation now, she wasn’t always as calm and optimistic about her potential outcome. When she first received her diagnosis, Polizzi said she couldn’t help but to feel a bit hopeless.
“I had a breakdown,” she said. “I got to my car and I called my mom hysterically crying, thinking the worst.”
Since then, 38-year-old Polizzi has undergone testing to confirm her cancer has not spread. After a hysterectomy procedure, likely within the coming months, she will not need any additional treatment, she said. She also acknowledged the huge risk she took in putting off her appointments.
“I knew something bad could happen,” she said, “but instead of dealing with it, I just pretended it wasn’t happening.”
