ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Rose Bowl in Pasadena has hosted some of the most iconic performers to come through Los Angeles, and it’s about to add a few names to that list.

Zipangu, presented by Goldenvoice and Cloud Nine, is a new Japanese music event that will take over the Brookside Golf Course at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, May 16.

The one-day showcase aims to be the largest Japanese music event in the U.S., uniting some of Japan’s most celebrated artists on an American stage for the first time, according to a press release from the event organizers.

Ado, the chart-topping Japanese singer who rarely performs and whose face has never been revealed, will headline the show. Also included on the list of performers are Atarashii Gakko!, Chanmina, Hana, MAN WITH A MISSION, Yuki Chiba and 10-Feet. Together, they represent the cutting edge of Japan’s genre-blurring, visually bold, and creatively fearless music scene.

Zipangu is inspired by a scene shaped alongside anime, manga, film, and digital culture and will showcase the distinct evolution of J-Pop and its many offshoots.

Several of the artists have considerable U.S. fan bases, including Ado, who recently concluded her second U.S. tour after her first in 2024. Prior to that, the 22-year-old “Utaite,” a Japanese word for amateur singers who use an avatar to post song covers online, had never been abroad.

Atarashii Gakko! first performed for U.S. audiences in 2021 and has performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and made an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" too. Chiba received a significant international boost thanks to his feature on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Mamushi” track. Rapper Chanmina and girl group Hana have also been increasing their presence with U.S. fans.

“Japanese music has a universe of creativity that the world is only beginning to discover,” a spokesperson of the Zipangu team said in a press statement. “Zipangu is the beginning of a new story, one that connects artists and fans through the power, vibrancy, and individuality of this scene.

Japan is an island nation where people feel the changing of the seasons and find beauty in wabi-sabi, the appreciation of impermanence and imperfection. In Japanese culture, there is the concept of the “Dō” — the Way — which values not only technical mastery but also courtesy, respect, and spiritual discipline. Through Zipangu, we invite audiences to see, hear, and feel Japan’s “Way of Music” — the Ongaku-dō — and experience the spirit of Cloud Nine-dō, celebrating artistry, dedication, and the heart of Japanese musical expression.”
