WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark over Greenland that he said would give the U.S. “permanent control over security” and that addressed U.S. concerns over the territory.

Trump announced the deal on social media Friday, saying that the arrangement was one that addressed “ALL of our many US concerns” and would be at “NO COST to the United States.”

The president did not share the text of any agreement in his post or any specifics about the terms. The U.S. already has an agreement with Denmark that allows it to station troops in Greenland.

“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” he wrote.

The U.S. president has long sought to assert control over the Danish territory, a stance that has drawn pushback from European and NATO allies.
