Sen. Mitch McConnell on Thursday said he was discharged from a rehabilitation center and will continue his recovery from a recent fall and illness at home.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a brief statement.

The 84-year-old seven-term Kentucky lawmaker, who isn’t running for reelection, offered no timeline for a return to the Senate, which is preparing to start its August recess and won’t be back until after Labor Day.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home … and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell added.

McConnell hasn’t been seen in public since being hospitalized on June 14, triggering rumors about his health and even conspiracy theories that he had died.

His staff repeatedly refused to answer questions about McConnell’s condition, fanning the calls by critics for more transparency. He skipped the state’s premier political event last weekend.

Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear even called on McConnell to give the people of the state an update on his condition and to resign from office if he doesn’t expect to return to Capitol Hill before his term expires on Jan. 1.

McConnell’s absence has complicated the math for Republicans in the Senate where President Trump’s party holds a slim 53-47 edge.

McConnell recently revealed that he suffered a fall at home while also battling a case of pneumonia. He admitted being briefly unconscious but said doctors determined he did not break any bones and did not suffer either a heart attack or a stroke.

The once powerful Senate leader, who survived childhood polio, has endured a series of health setbacks in recent years including several falls and two infamous incidents when he appeared to freeze and had to be hustled off stage during events.
