Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes suspended the application of legislation that would reduce the amount of time former President Jair Bolsonaro and others will serve for plotting a coup attempt, according to a ruling released on Saturday.

The suspension will be in effect until the court resolves the controversy after the filing of direct assertions of unconstitutionality.

“The supervening filing of a direct action of unconstitutionality and, consequently, the pending judgment in concentrated constitutional review, constitutes a new and relevant procedural fact that may influence the judgment of the requests made by the defense,” the justice stated in his order.

Moraes requested information from congress within five days and from the attorney general and the prosecutor general within three days.
