DENVER — A Friday morning crash in southern Colorado that killed two people and injured a 5-year-old girl went undiscovered for more than a day, according to law enforcement.

Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to the double-fatal crash near Bayfield on U.S. 160 at about 12:35 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the agency. Investigators believe the crash happened close to 6 a.m. Friday, roughly 30 hours earlier, but the flipped truck — a blue Chevrolet S10 — wasn’t visible from the roadway and went unnoticed.

It’s unclear why the truck crashed, but state patrol officials said it rolled off the highway’s south shoulder an unknown number of times and came to rest down the hill from the highway.

The driver, 25-year-old Devante Griffin of Farmington, New Mexico, and his passenger, 24-year-old Klariza Tarango from the same town, died at the scene of the crash, state patrol officials said in the release.

Paramedics took an unidentified 5-year-old girl to the hospital with unspecified injuries. She has since been released, according to the state patrol.

The girl was not trapped in the vehicle, but she stayed near the crash scene until law enforcement arrived, state patrol Trooper Hunter Mathews said.

As of Tuesday, neither impairment nor excessive speed was suspected to be a factor in the crash, and no charges were expected to be filed, state patrol officials said.

“Saturday‘s discovery of a fatal car crash is both a tragedy and a miracle for the 5 y/o,” Upper Pine River Fire Protection District officials wrote on Facebook. “It weighs heavily not only on our crews but for the family and the public who have suffered a loss, expressed their condolences and offered their prayers.”
