A Walmart patron made a fatal mistake when he attacked one of the store’s employees near closing time, according to investigators in North Mississippi.
Ledarius Clayton, 27, died after he was taken to a hospital, according to the Horn Lake Police Department.
The attack happened at 10:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Walmart on Goodman Road in Horn Lake, which is about a 20-mile drive south from Memphis.
“Officers arrived and found ... Clayton on one of the main aisles inside the store suffering from what appeared to be a laceration to his abdomen. EMS was called to the scene and rushed Clayton to Baptist DeSoto Hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” police said in a Sept. 8 news release.
“Investigators were able to speak to various witnesses as well as gather surveillance video which showed Clayton enter Walmart, walk directly down one of the main aisles until he observed a certain Walmart employee and immediately started a physical altercation with that Walmart employee. During the physical altercation, Clayton received a laceration to the abdomen area and fell down.”
The employee then “distanced himself” from suspect, but remained at the store, police said.
“The Walmart employee was later detained by responding officers. ... However, no charges have been filed on the employee at this time,” police said. “No other Walmart employees were believed to be in any danger.”
Investigators have not released details of a motive for the attack or the type of weapon that “cut” Clayton during the fight.
